Event Schedule

Live Presentations

2:45-3:30 p.m. ET

Keynote Presentation: “A Scientist in Progress: A Never-Ending Journey”

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Karen Mumy, Director, Environmental Health Effects Laboratory, Naval Medical Research Unit-Dayton

Abstract: Everyone’s career progresses through a different path and, with some exception, no two paths are the same. This is especially true when it comes to scientists and researchers that likely spend many years in the education and training phases, making a “career” quite a dynamic journey with twists and turns as the individual hones in on their own passion and abilities. Each budding scientist starts in a different place, and one might say that the journey never really ends for a scientist. This talk will focus on Dr. Karen Mumy’s journey down a STEM path, her experiences along the way, where she started and where she is now. Dr. Mumy will also share what she’s learned along the way. Finally, as the director of a laboratory within Navy Medicine, Dr. Mumy will briefly describe some of the research being performed at the Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton and how ORISE participants contribute to military medicine research.

3:45-4:30 p.m. ET

ORISE Informational Session

Presenter: Andrew Crain, Associate Manager, STEM Workforce Development, Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE)

Guest Speaker: Ondine Eken, former ORISE participant, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research
