YOUR TO-DO LIST:
Update your resume.
Sign up, complete your profile and upload your resume.
Save the date on your calendar with several reminders.
BEFORE THE FAIR:
Read up on the stations by visiting their websites or streaming online.
Prepare for a 10-minute chat by anticipating questions.
Decide what three key points you want to make about yourself, your relevant experience and skills. Practice talking about that so you can make it sound natural, not rehearsed.
Come up with at least one good question you might ask a recruiter.
Visit current.org to sign up for our free newsletter and read up on public media so you know more about this field. If you hit the paywall, just subscribe for one month ($13).
DURING THE CAREER FAIR:
Visit and get in line at multiple booths. The more booths you sign up for, the better your chances of connecting with recruiters. Read about the organizations and job opportunities. When it’s your turn to chat with a representative, be prepared to share your personal background, answer questions about your experience, goals and interests, ask memorable questions. Time is limited so make the most of it.
Smile, be warm, charming, but serious. Keep your answers to questions to no more than a minute, so you can have a deeper conversation with the recruiter. Remember to thank the recruiter at the end of your chat or DM them after your chat ends.
AFTER THE FAIR:
If you want that job, send a hand-written note to the person you spoke with within a few days. If you don’t want the job, send a thank you email.
DO NOT accept an invitation for an interview unless you really want the job, know and accept the salary range, and are willing to move if required. There is nothing that annoys recruiters more than wasting precious time on someone whose only aim is to “get experience” being interviewed.
Take the anonymous survey to let Current know more about your experience. Thanks!
Look out for an email offering you a free 6-month subscription to Current. Take that offer!
Current thanks the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation for their generous sponsorship of this annual event.
We also thank the Wyncote Foundation for their ongoing support of Current.
